August 21 marks Senior Citizens Day this year! In such a fast-paced world where our older community members are often overlooked, it's such an important day to celebrate and acknowledge our appreciation for those who paved the way for us.

It's no mystery that our local restaurants and retail stores offer some great deals for seniors, but there are so many activities and groups for seniors to enjoy in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, too. Here are some activities for 727area seniors that can be enjoyed with friends, family, or solo! 

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Eckerd College

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) promotes life-enriching experiences for adult learners of all ages. There are no tests or grades, just the opportunity to expand your mind and gain new knowledge!

On Wednesday, August 21, OLLI is holding a morning class on Bette and Joan: The Divine Feud, which discusses the parallel careers of Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, who both starred in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

Arts About Town: Florida Holocaust Museum 

Active Adults' Art About Town is hosting an excursion to the Florida Holocaust Museum on Senior Citizens Day. This excursion features a private presentation by Professor Emeritus, Howard Kerner titled, “Heroes of the Holocaust – Noble Tales Emerging from the Darkness.” The event is held from noon until 4 p.m., and transportation is available if needed.

Sunken Gardens

Walking is a healthy activity for all ages, but it's especially important for senior citizens. As the "oldest living museum," Sunken Gardens offers a beautiful backdrop for your daily stroll. An added bonus: they offer a discount for seniors over 62!

Ball Game at Tropicana Field

On Senior Citizens Day, you can enjoy America's favorite pastime while the Tampa Bay Rays go head-to-head in an afternoon game against the Seattle Mariners at TropicanaField.

St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club

St. Petersburg is home to the world's largest shuffleboard club. If you're a league member, you can enjoy a few matches on Senior Citizens Day since it falls on a Wednesday, one of two league nights at the club. Whether you're browsing through some of the amazing antique and thrift stores in St. Petersburg and Clearwater or filling up your cart at the local Kohl's and enjoying your senior discount, shopping around and scoring some deals is a great way to take full advantage of Senior Citizens Day.
