Maybe you're planning a vacation to beautiful St. Pete on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and are wondering how to have fun within your budget.

A good place to start would be scenic St. Pete Beach. There are miles of beaches in and around the St. Pete Beach area with all types of recreation from fishing and boating to picnicking and miles of nature trails.

Fort De Soto, a historic park on an island off the coast of St. Pete Beach, is home to remnants of a fort used as a gunnery and bombing range during WWII, two fishing piers; one facing Tampa Bay and the other extending 500 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. There are also picnic areas, and kayak and bicycle rentals also available. For more biking and hiking or skating, plan an afternoon enjoying the scenery along the Pinellas Trail.

Visit one of the many St. Petersburg events held on Corey Avenue. There is a real sense of community in this historic area. As you continue on northward you'll arrive at John's Pass Village and Boardwalk, a great place for window shopping, people watching, and restaurant dining.

For the nature lovers, pay a visit to the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary located on Gulf Boulevard in Indian Shores. This is a place where injured seabirds are taken to be treated and rehabilitated before being returned to the wild. Those unable to be released have a forever home here. Admission is free, however, donations are accepted.

The kids will enjoy a trip to Hill Nature Park. While this not free (there is a whopping $2 fee) they offer over three miles of trails and boardwalks, playgrounds and five different protected ecosystems to educate and intrigue the minds of children and adults alike.

Go downtown for St. Petersburg events and other activities such as First Friday, and the ongoing presentation of the Florida Folk Concert series presented by the Florida Museum of History.

From the Gulf waters to downtown, and recreational to cultural activities, each community of St. Petersburg has it's own unique flavor.

These are just a few of the many free things to do in St. Petersburg Florida.  Get out there and explore this great city today!
