The Destination Management Organization for Pasco County, Florida's Sports Coast, has announced its 10-day Bay Scallop Season running July 17-26. You can catch up to two gallons of them each day, whether you're snorkeling from the shore or going by boat.

“Scalloping is a unique and exciting offering for our destination; we’re thrilled to offer such a special experience each year and to welcome back families and friends as they scallop with us this season,” said Adam Thomas, director of tourism at Experience Florida’s Sports Coast.

What You'll Need

You'll need a swim mask, fins and snorkel, and a small mesh bag. Also, a diving flag is required by law to indicate you're underwater. If you use a local fishing charter guide, they'll take care of the license and the flag. The other advantage of hiring a private charter or captain for scalloping is they'll know the best places to look, as it changes a bit each year with the tides and weather.

Scalloping is considered a sea adventure that requires basic swimming skills and it's something that the whole family can enjoy. Sweet scallops are one of Florida’s tastiest seafood delicacies. The island of Anclote Key Preserve State Park offers a secluded area where you can try primitive cooking with campfire-style cooking or if you take them home, there are plenty of scallop recipes to try.
