Event Details
Join us at PRINT ST. PETE Community Letterpress for Casual Lettering II with Jeff Williams of Sun Signs on Saturday, May 25th (12pm-4pm). NOTE: This workshop is for students who have taken Casual Lettering I, or students with equivalent brush lettering experience.
We will start with an introduction into single stroke brushes and materials combined with practicing the basic casual letterforms. Once everyone is comfortable using their new brushes and happy with their casual chart we will start applying these strokes to our casual script lettering charts and the application of single stroke script.
Next we can start discussing the effect of light on the letters. I will then demonstrate how to decide where our light source should be coming from as well as where the shadows will be cast. We will then apply the shadow and move onto the low lights. With the low lights added we will move on to their counter part and discuss highlights to give our letters depth. The highlights will dimensionally mirror our shadows and low lights. We will then continue to practice the above techniques until everyone is comfortable with their charts. Once we are feeling comfortable with our reference charts we can move onto creating our own paper signs. I will assist all students with their scratch layouts and placement of text as well as the proper way to hold a brush and pull their strokes.
At the end of the workshop you will have learned all of the tips and tricks to take your casual lettering to the next level in addition to your very own paper sign. The skills students will learn can be applied signs of all kinds as well as used in art and graphic design.
All necessary materials will be provided, and each student will be able to take their brushes and reference charts with them to continue their lettering skills at home!
This is a 4 hour workshop with one (optional) 30 minute break half way through. Feel free to bring a snacks or beverages with you which can be stored in our mini fridge.
