Gun violence. Accidental shootings. Armed robbery. All thing we can do without in our communities. This past weekend, the Clearwater police department stepped up to the plate to help us do just that, by hosting it's first ever Gifts for Guns initiative.

Gifts For Guns is a program that has found itself in many communities around the Nation suffering from gun violence. The program is used as an anti-violence tool to get guns off the street. Attendees are encouraged to give their weapons to the police department in exchange for a cash reward, usually in the form of a gift card.

The Gifts for Guns initiative has taken thousands of guns off the streets and ultimately decreased gun violence in several large U.S. cities. All the guns collected will be melted down and used to make various other non-violent products.

Once your weapons are turned over to authorities, there are no questions asked and you are free to claim your gift. On June 10, the 727 area participated in this event, to continue fighting against the gun violence in the surrounding community.

This year, the Clearwater/St. Pete area has experienced the loss of two officers and an apartment security guard to gun violence in the line of duty. Along with 95.7 the Beat and Largo Police Department, the Clearwater Police Department spearheaded the event. Over 300 guns were collected from the event this year.

If you or someone you know would still like to turn in a gun, get more information here.
