Gary Monroe has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Florida Department of State’s Division of Cultural Affairs, Florida Humanities Council, and the Fulbright Foundation to support his photography.

Follow photographer and author Mr. Gary Monroe into the world of Florida's Outsider art! In this vivid presentation, Monroe introduces remarkable self-taught Florida artists, while exposing the ideas that led to their renegade creationsI Doors open at 6:30 p.m., talk begins at 7 p.m.
His long-time interest in “outsider” and vernacular art spurred his research about the Highwaymen; his book The Highwaymen: Florida’s African-American Landscape Painters was published by the University Press of Florida (2001). This was followed by Harold Newton: Florida’s Original Highwayman (2007), The Highwaymen Murals: Al Black’s Concrete Dreams (2009), and Mary Ann Carroll: First Lady of the Highwaymen (2014). As a lecturer for the Florida Humanities Council’s Speakers Bureau, Mr. Monroe has brought the Highwaymen story to the citizenry of Florida with some 300 public lectures. He has written other books about Florida art, including Extraordinary Interpretations: Self-taught Florida Artists (2003) and Silver Springs: the Underwater Photographs of Bruce Mozert (2008). His most recent book is E. G. Barnhill: Florida Photographer, Adventurer, Entrepreneur (2016).
A native of Miami Beach, Monroe received a master’s degree in the fine arts from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1977. Upon returning to home, he photographed the old world Jewish community that characterized South Beach, through 1986. He has traveled throughout Haiti with camera in hand–two dozen times, and looked at tourism across Florida, especially the “rite of passage” of vacationers at Disney World. The staple of his photography is Florida. In addition to these long-term involvements, Mr. Monroe has photographed at Cassadaga. This work resulted in Cassadaga: The South’s Oldest Spiritualist Community (University Press of Florida, 2000). He has traveled the world to photograph–to Brazil, Israel, Cuba, India, and Trinidad to name a few of the countries that interest him–while maintaining his interest in things Florida, including an in-depth look at the abandoned theme park Splendid China and “corporate-driven architecture” throughout the state.
