727area has new update 9 hours ago Lightning Round: NHL prospects Jasper Weatherby and Jacob Bernard-Docker to kneel during national anthem at NCAA season opener
OTTAWA, ON - JUNE 29: Ottawa Senators Prospect Defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker (48) looks on during the Ottawa Senators Development Camp on June 29, 2018, at Richcraft Sensplex in Ottawa, ON, Canada. | Photo by Richard A. Whittaker/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The UND alternate captains “stand with our brothers and sisters of color.” University of North Dakota alternate captains Jasper Weatherby (SJS 4th, 2018) and Jacob Bernard-Docker (OTT 1st, 2018) will kneel for the national anthem at the team’s season opener today. [Grand Forks Herald] “We believe racial injustices and the treatment of minorities and people of color in this country needs to stop, and it needs to be improved all over America and all over the world,” Weatherby said. “For us, being able to have a platform in a place where there aren’t a lot of people of color in hockey or in Grand Forks, it’s a really interesting position for us to be in. It’s a great platform. You will remember that the University of North Dakota had former Arizona Coyotes draft pick Mitchell Miller on their team before the NHL club renounced the pick and the college cut him from his roster. Quite a turnaround and the credit goes to the players. “‘At the end of the day, we want UND to be a safe place. As athletes who do have a platform, we stand with our brothers and sisters of color.’ “Weatherby and Bernard-Docker, who are both white, know it will make some people uncomfortable, and they’re OK with that.” I wrote at length about the debacle surrounding Isaiah Meyer-Crothers, including a point about how UND was an opportunity for Miller to unlearn his racist tendencies and be accepting of others. They and the Coyotes chose instead to wash their hands of the whole thing. I do wonder if change could’ve come if Miller was exposed to players like Weatherby and Bernard-Docker. Maybe Isaiah would’ve at least heard an apology. I encourage everyone to read what these amazing young men have to say and why we all need to internalize and reflect on their message. Lightning Links A lot of people have asked Mathieu Joseph how his helmet fits on his head with that much hair and...well... “Juuust liiike dat ” pic.twitter.com/ibTVtbe1DV— ?? (@Alisa_Eaton) December 1, 2020 Hugo from Sweden stops pucks. [Raw Charge] “The 2020-21 season has started for Alnefelt in Sweden and has been a bit rough. In 10 games, he has a 3.04 GAA and .904 save percentage, but has a 4-6-0 record. He’s also expected to once again compete to be the top goaltender for Team Sweden at the U20 World Junior Championship with another chance at securing a medal in the top junior tournament.” Nikita Kucherov: “I’m on boat!” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sergei (@fromrussiawithglove) And don’t forget to keep up with where the Stanley Cup has gone and where it’s planning to go! Free WIFI! So, @KnightsBaseball is doing a "Work From Home Plate" program all off-season, where you can rent a suite to change up your 2020 work routine. Free WiFi and coffee and, yes, it's pretty awesome! pic.twitter.com/cPfLpnl6b3— Ryan McGee (@ESPNMcGee) November 30, 2020 Pierre LeBrun has been hinting at this for weeks but this time he seems really fed up with the NHL propelling along a January 1st start date. Do the math — all the CBA paperwork, then travel schedules, quarantine periods, training camp (while prospects are huddled in Edmonton for the World Juniors?) — it’s not happening. And the fact that nothing has been decided (on just the salary deferral issue alone, before we even get into any season planning) just furthers that point. At least the Lightning will be champions for a little longer. The players' Return to Play Committee has another call scheduled for this afternoon. The 16-player committee has been meeting regularly. One source on the committee says he feels a season start somewhere between Jan. 20-Feb. 1 makes more sense at this point, but nothing decided.— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) December 1, 2020
