727Area has new update 15 hours ago Rays prospects and minor leagues: Lowe, Wendle continue rehab assignments with Durham
Photo by G Fiume/Getty Images A pair of Rays infielders took another step toward a return to the majors. As we noted Tuesday, two former Rays prospects debuted for the Rangers in their doubleheader. In Game 1, Nick Solak debuted and went 1-for-3. In Game 2, Brock Burke debuted with six scoreless innings, and Solak hit his first big league home run. Triple-A Durham Bulls (69-58) Durham lost to Charlotte, 9-3. The Knights had four multi-run innings and led 4-0 before the Bulls got on the board in the fourth on Emilio Bonifacio’s RBI triple. Sam McWilliams allowed six runs — four earned — in five innings. 3B Joey Wendle: 0-for-4, 1 K2B Brandon Lowe: 0-for-4, 2 K1B Nate Lowe: 1-for-4 (.939)LF Kean Wong: 3-for-5, 2 RBI (.874)CF Emilio Bonifacio: 1-for-2, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (.815) RHP Sam McWilliams: 5 IP, 8 H, 6 R (4 ER), 2 BB, 3 K (8.12) Durham’s site offers this recap. Double-A Montgomery Biscuits (38-19) Montgomery cruised to an 8-1 win over Biloxi. In his second Double-A start, Joe Ryan continued to display his strikeout stuff, punching out nine batters and allowing a run in 4 2?3 innings. He was supported by early offense. Taylor Walls hit an RBI single in the first, and Carl Chester later drove in two with a triple. After the Shuckers scored in the fifth, the Biscuits closed the game with four unanswered runs. SS Lucius Fox: 2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.687)2B Vidal Brujan: 0-for-5, 1 K (.725)DH Taylor Walls: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 3 K (.813)CF Josh Lowe: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 SB (.768)RF Miles Mastrobuoni: 4-for-4, 2 R, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 SB (.758) RHP Joe Ryan: 4 2?3 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 9 K (4.15) Class A-Advanced Charlotte Stone Crabs (42-18) Offense was in short supply in Charlotte’s 13-inning, 4-2 loss to Fort Myers. Somehow, neither team was able to take advantage of the free baserunner in the first three extra innings, and then the Miracle blew the game open with three in the 13th. With two outs in the 13th, Ronaldo Hernandez’s RBI single finally got the Stone Crabs a run in extras, but it wasn’t enough. Cristopher Sanchez allowed a run in 4 1?3 innings. LF Niko Hulsizer: 1-for-5, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS (.944)C Ronaldo Hernandez: 2-for-6, 1 RBI, 1 K (.711)RF Moises Gomez: 0-for-5, 1 BB, 4 K (.693)DH Garrett Whitley: 0-for-4, 4 K (.748)1B Joey Roach: 1-for-3, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K (.637) LHP Cristopher Sanchez: 4 1?3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 K (1.86)RHP Simon Rosenblum-Larson: 2 2?3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K (3.27)RHP Alex Valverde: 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K (4.13) Class-A Bowling Green Hot Rods (34-23) Bowling Green had one big inning and held on for a 6-5 win over Fort Wayne. After accomplishing very little through six innings, the Hot Rods broke out for six in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead. A run scored on an error, then Chris Betts, Seaver Whalen, and Ford Proctor all hit RBI singles. The final run scored on a wild pitch. Shane Baz had another fine start, striking out seven and allowing just an unearned run in five innings. CF Nick Schnell: 1-for-4, 1 R, 1 K (.423) RHP Shane Baz: 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 7 K (2.89) Bowling Green’s site offers this recap. Short-Season Hudson Valley Renegades (36-27) Hudson Valley is at the All-Star break. Rookie Princeton Rays (28-31) Princeton fell to Elizabethton in 11 innings, 7-6. Each team’s free baserunner in the 10th scored, but in the 11th, the Twins plated a pair on an error. The Rays’ free runner again scored in the 11th, but they never got the potential tying run on base. Matthew Peguero started and threw two scoreless innings. RF Diego Infante: 3-for-5, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K (.840)SS Abiezel Ramirez: 1-for-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K (1.000)CF Yunior Martinez: 3-for-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 SB (.765)C Kevin Melendez: 1-for-5, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K (.642) RHP Matthew Peguero: 2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (6.00) Rookie Gulf Coast League Rays (21-24) The GCL Rays earned a 3-2 win over the GCL Red Sox. Zach Huffins’ RBI triple in the seventh gave the Rays their first lead, but the Red Sox tied the game in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, Luis Arcendo reached on a bunt single, and Huffins hit a walk-off RBI double. Franklin Dacosta was charged with an unearned run in three innings, and Dauris Cordero struck out eight in four scoreless frames out of the bullpen. DH Shane Sasaki: 2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 SB (.377)LF Zach Huffins: 2-for-4, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 2 K (.682) LHP Franklin Dacosta: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R (0 ER), 4 BB, 3 K (2.04)RHP Dauris Cordero: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K (2.92) CLICK HERE FOR ALL BOX SCORES Wednesday’s games (probables courtesy of milb.com) Durham vs. Charlotte 7:05 p.m. ET (MiLB.TV, radio stream)TBA vs. Odrisamer Despaigne (6-5, 3.64) Montgomery vs. Biloxi 7:35 p.m. ET (MiLB.TV, radio stream)Shane McClanahan (1-0, 7.71) vs. Drew Rasmussen (1-3, 3.96) Charlotte @ Fort Myers 7 p.m. ET (radio stream)Stephen Woods Jr. (9-3, 1.98) vs. TBA Bowling Green @ Lake County 7 p.m. ET (MiLB.TV, radio stream)TBA vs. Alex Royalty (5-7, 4.42) New York-Penn League All-Star Game 7 p.m. (MiLB.TV) Princeton vs. Bluefield 6:30 p.m. ET (radio stream)TBA vs. TBA GCL Rays @ GCL Pirates 12 p.m. *Listed as TBA on milb.com Scouting the opposition Charlotte Knights (White Sox)71-56 (2nd in IL South)Offense: 672 R (3rd) .822 OPS (3rd)Pitching: 5.38 ERA (12th) 1.53 WHIP (13th)Top-30 prospects: OF Luis Robert (1), 2B Nick Madrigal (5), C Zack Collins (12), RHP Ian Hamilton (13), C Seby Zavala (15), RHP Spencer Adams (20), RHP Zach Thompson (28), OF Brandon Guyer, LHP Hunter Schryver Biloxi Shuckers (Milwaukee)35-21Offense: 501 R (4th) .700 OPS (4th)Pitching: 3.20 ERA (4th) 1.14 WHIP (1st)Top-30 prospects: RHP Drew Rasmussen (12), RHP Dylan File (28), C Alexander Alvarez, 3B Patrick Leonard Fort Myers Miracle (Minnesota)30-28Offense: 465 R (8th) .670 OPS (6th)Pitching: 3.18 ERA (2nd) 1.19 WHIP (2nd)Top-30 prospects: RHP Blayne Enlow (8), IF Jose Miranda (13), OF Gabriel Maciel (14), OF Akil Baddoo (19), RHP Jordan Balazovic (20), RHP Chris Vallimont (24), 2B Michael Helman (27), OF Aaron Whitefield (28), RHP Johan Quezada (29) Lake County Captains (Cleveland)29-28Offense: 574 R (3rd) .700 OPS (4th)Pitching: 3.78 ERA (9th) 1.36 WHIP (11th)Top-30 prospects: C Bo Naylor (4), RHP Luis Oviedo (8), RHP Ethan Hankins (9), OF Quentin Holmes (27), SS Raynel Delgado (30) Bluefield Blue Jays28-31 (T-3rd in AL East)Offense: 344 R (1st) .759 OPS (1st)Pitching: 4.78 ERA (9th) 1.46 WHIP (9th)Top-30 prospects: IF Miguel Hiraldo (10), IF Leonardo Jimenez (21) GCL Pirates15-30Offense: 158 R (18th) .642 OPS (14th)Pitching: 4.99 ERA (18th) 1.59 WHIP (18th)Top-30 prospects: RHP Quinn Priester, OF Sammy Siani Daily news and links Toronto prospect T.J. 727Area has new update 15 hours ago Quick Strikes: New uniforms for an old rival and a GM gets a new contract
Photo by Cliff Welch/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images There’s nothing going on so here is a picture of a dog. News in the NHL continues to trickle out slower than traffic on the Howard Frankland at rush hour. The Canucks did renew their faith in General Manager Jim Benning and now he has to hope the veterans he brought in this summer mesh well with the youngsters already on the roster. In Toronto, the Mitch Marner negotiations have hit the “Will he play in Europe?” stage in the media cycle with reports that he might play for Zurich if his contract with the Leafs isn’t ironed out before the season starts. Meanwhile there is no news on Brayden Point joining the Brandon Beer League if things sour on his negotiations. The Top 25 Under 25 ranking continues to roll on with a very intriguing forward who might be on the cusp of finally making it to the NHL. The Bolts Ryan Callahan strapped some skates on his son for the first time. The kid immediately skated to the corner of the living room and checked his Thomas the Train figure into the wall. [Twitter] Little mans first pair of skates!!! “Hockey” pic.twitter.com/rJDkxuFSWu— Ryan Callahan (@TheRealCally24) August 18, 2019 Carter Verhaeghe checks in at number 12 on the Top 25 Under 25. [Raw Charge] The biggest thing Verhaeghe did last season was be consistent in a sea of inconsistencies. From puck drop in October until puck flop in April, when the Crunch was rudely ousted from the Calder Cup playoffs in the first round, Verhaeghe maintained a cool, calm, and collected attitude. That attitude played a part in a season that saw Verhaeghe rack up the minutes, the points, and the trust. An outside look at the Andrei Vasilevskiy signing. [NHL Trade Rumors] But when it comes to the postseason, he’s gone 15-15 in 33 appearances with a 2.83 GAA and a 91.9 save percentage. If these numbers don’t improve and the Lightning fail to win a Stanley Cup in the next two or three years it’s possible the club will try to get out of the contract once the modified trade clause kicks in. The Prospects Howard Dolgon, the owner of the Syracuse Crunch, is in Syracuse meeting with the Crunch’s Chief Operating Officer and the Senior VP of Business Operations/CFO/Alternate Governor. It will be interesting to see what comes out of these meetings. [Twitter] Early morning flight to Syracuse but energy level super high today. Major @SyracuseCrunch meetings set for today. Off season has been strongest in years with more good news to come shortly. See you soon @JimSarosy and @VanceLederman— Howard Dolgon (@HowardDolgon) August 20, 2019 The team that bounced the Crunch from the playoffs in the first round of the playoffs last season extended their affiliation with the team that knocked the Lightning out of the first round of the playoffs last season. [Twitter] #CBJ and @monstershockey announce multi-year extension of affiliation partnership.https://t.co/mi4q9BZLK9— Columbus Blue Jackets (@BlueJacketsNHL) August 20, 2019 The Crunch are looking for some video interns. It’s a great chance to get your foot in the door with a well-run AHL franchise. [Twitter] Who is ready to join the FFM team? Looking for video interns for the 2019-20 @SyracuseCrunch season. Apply online at https://t.co/P7VacuzpZX— Fully Focused Media (@FullyFocusedMed) August 20, 2019 The Game: Remember the guy who gave the Lightning a 1st round pick for J.T. Miller? He got an extension. The Canucks extended the contract of Jim Benning for three more years. He’ll get to stick around to see how the young kids turn out. [Vancouver Sun] It often overshadows the work that has been done because the GM’s strength is understanding where the game is going. The first-round selections of Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes — and trying to surround them with support — has been critical even though it has come with considerable scrutiny. The Hurricanes released their new road jersey design. The internet reacted with a collective shrug. [Canes Country for the details and Twitter for the look at all three uniforms.] With the Hurricanes' new road uni release, their uni set now looks like this. pic.twitter.com/DzLz8wHNQw— Paul Lukas (@UniWatch) August 20, 2019 ESPN names an All-Decade roster for each NHL team in the league. Hey, look Alex Killorn made it for the Lightning. That should go over well. [ESPN] One of the toughest calls of the decade: Martin St. Louis, the personification of the Lightning entering the decade, vs. Kucherov, who captured the Hart Trophy last season, on right wing. We’ll give Kucherov the nod here because of his role in the Jon Cooper era and because his final year of the decade probably puts him over the top. It’s been at least three hours since the last Mitch Marner rumor so where is he going to play next year? Switzerland? Sure, why not. [Twitter] Reports are accurate the Marner camp has had discussions with Zurich. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him go there to train in early Sept. Dubas and Ferris met last week. Positive talks, but no progress.— Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) August 20, 2019 The Brothers Brown made it on T.V. Former Lightning forward J.T. Brown and his brother, Sieed, were in the crowd for a WWE event and were shown celebrating the new tag team champions. After a nice refreshing glass of local orange juice, you grab your briefcase and head out the front door of your apartment. The next thing you know a small furry mammal native to Central and South America is latched onto your leg. [Time] Natalie Dulach said the furry mammal with sharp claws clung to the man’s leg as he fought to get it out. The man managed to lock the long-tailed animal in the bathroom until wildlife officers arrived.
