Locally owned Latin-inspired restaurant chain, Mr. Empanada is set to open a brand-new prototype restaurant in the heart of St. Petersburg on Wednesday, September 12.

The new Mr. Empanada has taken up shop at 4946 Fourth St. N. just outside of Downtown St. Petersburg.  According to the company's website, this will be the seventh Mr. Empanada location in the Tampa Bay area alongside other restaurants in Lutz, Carrollwood, and a stand at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.

This Mr. Empanada will be different, though.  No bland decor here; the St. Petersburg Mr. Empanada location will boast a slew of state-of-the-art features including digital menu boards, a modern granite design, and more.  This new, working prototype is designed to encourage customers to stay and eat at the restaurant as opposed to ordering their food to go and leaving.

The Mr. Empanada franchise began in Tampa in 1984 with a small location on Armenia Ave. founded by husband and wife team Albert Perez and Lisa Perez Ferras.  Now they've grown into a local franchise with multiple locations as well as distributing partnerships with grocery chains like Costco in the area.

Mr. Empanada hardly limits itself to the typical ground beef, seasonings, and cheese variety of these fried, doughy Latin treats.  Stop in to Mr. Empanada - including the brand new St. Petersburg location - and you can choose from a variety of empanada flavors including Italian sausage and cheese, apple, pizza, crab meat, and more.
