5 hours ago Braves News: Dodgers on deck, Jimmy Herget acquisition, and more
Photo by Michael Owens/MLB Photos via Getty Images Atlanta Braves news and notes from Thursday. After a much needed Thursday off, the Atlanta Braves will continue play out West in the form of a three-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Braves are coming off a tough series in Seattle, where they dropped two of three games. The offense was quiet for the majority of the series, but nevertheless, the Braves enter play with a 20-9 record and a half-game division lead. The Dodgers have put together a 20-13 record and already have a decent lead over the NL West. The series gets underway late Friday night at 10:10 ET. Charlie Morton is slated to take on right-hander Gavin Stone. Morton has been brilliant his last two outings, giving up just two runs on eight hits in 13 frames. He is seeking his third win of the season. Stone made his MLB debut on this day last year and has since posted a 7.07 ERA in the big leagues. The series continues on Saturday, with another late-night start time of 9:10 ET. Bryce Elder makes his third start and is chasing his second win of the year. He faces right-handed Tyler Glasnow, who has already won five games this season. The series finale is set for Sunday afternoon at 4:10 ET. Max Fried returns to the mound against lefty James Paxton. Fried has been incredible as of late, coming off of a scoreless outing in Seattle, and a Maddux against the Miami Marlins. Paxton, however, has allowed eight runs over his last three starts and walked plenty. The Braves aim to get back on track and wrap up the road trip on a high note. More Braves News: The Braves added some depth on Thursday night in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels. Atlanta acquired reliever Jimmy Herget in exchange for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett. #Braves added bullpen depth by getting veteran RH Jimmy Herget from the Angels in exchange for cash, then optioned him to Triple A. Herget, 30, has a 3.97 ERA and 0.971 WHIP in 10 Triple-A appearances this season. In 29 MLB appearances in 2023, he had a 4.66 ERA and 1.414 WHIP.— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) May 3, 2024 AJ Smith-Shawver put together an impressive outing on Wednesday, with five scoreless innings. More in the minor league recap. MLB Pipeline’s latest mock draft has catcher Caleb Lomavita headed to Atlanta. The Braves have hit many ground balls this season, but still came away with a successful April. Here’s how the Braves are expected to perform for the remainder of the season. After one month of the 2024 season, David O’Brien of The Athletic presents a list of which players’ stock went up (or down). MLB News: The New York Mets plan to call up pitching prospect Christian Scott in the coming days. He is expected to make his major league debut on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Cleveland Guardians starter Gavin Williams has resumed his throwing program after being reevaluated. Last week, Williams was shut down due to elbow discomfort. The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired reliever Matt Bowman from the Minnesota Twins for cash considerations. The Twins had just added Bowman on a minor league deal over the winter. New York Mets reliever Brooks Raley suffered an elbow injury that may require surgery. The club has yet to make a decision on his treatment plan. The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to reinstate starting pitcher Walker Buehler from the injured list on Monday. Buehler has not made a major league appearance since June 2022 after Tommy John surgery. The San Francisco Giants have recalled reliever Randy Rodriguez to make his MLB debut. The 24-year-old has already put up some impressive numbers in Triple-A Sacramento. The Julio Urias saga continues as the former Dodgers pitcher pleaded no contest to a domestic battery charge. Reliever Mychal Givens opted out of his deal with the Miami Marlins and is now a free agent. Givens signed on with the Fish in mid-March.

14 hours ago Braves acquire Jimmy Herget from Angels
Robert Gauthier/Los Angeles Times via Getty Images The Braves added depth to their bullpen that they can stash in the minors. The Braves acquired right-handed reliever Jimmy Herget from the Angels for cash. The #Braves today acquired RHP Jimmy Herget from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations, and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett.— Atlanta Braves (@Braves) May 3, 2024 Anthopoulos is making a deal with a front office he is very familiar with, as the Angels’ GM used to work for Anthopoulos. Herget is a veteran who has had some brief success in the majors, but has not been as good recently. He posted a really good season in 2022 and had a solid season in 2021 as well, before falling off in 2023. At his best he puts up a mediocre strikeout rate while keeping walks and home runs to a minimum, using his breaking balls (slider and curveball) to good effect. His fastballs (sinker and four-seamer) are quite hittable, but he throws his breaking balls the majority of the time. He’s nice veteran depth to stash at AAA without costing any meaningful assets.
