Dali & Beyond Film Series: Bram Stoker's Dracula

The Dali & Beyond Film Series features an eclectic selection of films – both familiar and fantastic – with monthly themes ranging from horror, experimental and psychological to kid-friendly and world cinema. Kicking off our new exhibition, Dali and Schiaparelli, October’s movie theme is “Haute Couture Horror,” featuring frightful films with extraordinary costume design.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula
Adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic vampire novel. Gary Oldman plays Dracula whose lonely soul is determined to reunite with his lost love, Mina (Winona Ryder). In Britain, Dracula begins a reign of terror and seduction in search of the woman who looks like his long-dead wife. Vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing sets out to ends the madness.

Costuming
Internationally honored conceptual artist Eiko Ishioka had never seen a Dracula movie before she started work on Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation. She ultimately relied strongly on the art of Symbolist painters, especially Gustav Klimt, on the Surrealists and on examples of decadent art, on Botticelli and Rosetti, in addition to historical research of the Victorian era, with everything filtered through through her constant discussions with Coppola about creating a style that had never been seen before.
