The Dali & Beyond Film Series features an eclectic selection of films – both familiar and fantastic – with monthly themes ranging from horror, experimental and psychological to kid-friendly and world cinema. Kicking off our new exhibition, Dali and Schiaparelli, October’s movie theme is “Haute Couture Horror,” featuring frightful films with extraordinary costume design.
Crimson Peak
After marrying the charming and seductive Sir Thomas Sharpe, young Edith finds herself swept away to his remote Gothic mansion in the English hills. Also living there is Lady Lucille, Thomas’ alluring sister and protector of her family’s dark secrets. Able to communicate with the dead, Edith tries to decipher the mystery behind the ghostly visions that haunt her new home. As she comes closer to the truth, Edith may learn that true monsters are made of flesh and blood.
Costuming
Though taking place in the Victorian era, the costumes in Crimson Peak communicate more than just the period. Costume designer Kate Hawley conveys a dichotomy in both setting and dress. Of this opposing aesthetic, Hawley says, “I can’t say this strongly enough, that Crimson Peak felt like an opera, or a piece of music in that there’s almost two acts, you have the world of Buffalo and the world of Allerdale, and there are two seasons and colors and themes.” The costuming acts as a key element in creating mood, and it reveals subconscious clues into the story. As the plot and characters develop, so do the costumes. Hawley says, “I didn’t want to get myself caught up in detail that didn’t feel like it meant anything, like generic lace or decoration. So all the details we made and they all came from the symbolism of the characters or the house itself.”
