Due to the scheduled early closure of the Museum on Saturday October 14, the film will be shown at 11:30 am. The Dali & Beyond Film Series will resume its usual schedule on Saturday October 21.

The Dali & Beyond Film Series features an eclectic selection of films – both familiar and fantastic – with monthly themes ranging from horror, experimental and psychological to kid-friendly and world cinema. Kicking off our new exhibition, Dali and Schiaparelli, October’s movie theme is “Haute Couture Horror,” featuring frightful films with extraordinary costume design.

The Cell
The Cell takes a shocking, riveting mind trip into the dark and dangerous corridors of a serial killer’s psyche – a psyche that holds the key to saving the killer’s final, trapped victim who remains alive. Making this journey into the recesses of a killer’s nightmarish fantasy world is Catherine Deane, a psychologist who has been experimenting with a radical new therapy. Through a new transcendental science, Catherine can experience what is happening in another person’s unconscious mind.

Costuming
Costuming for The Cell is credited to designer Eiko Ishioka. Ishioka’s design aesthetic embraced the gothic, the otherworldly, the dramatic and the unsettling and was suffused with a powerful, dark eroticism. Ishioka was closely associated with the director Tarsem Singh, for whom she designed costumes for four films. In The Cell, she encased Jennifer Lopez, who plays a psychologist trapped by a serial killer, in a headpiece that resembled a cross between a rigid neck brace and a forbidding bird cage. Ishioka told The Ottawa Citizen, “Jennifer asked me if I could make it more comfortable, but I said, ‘No, you’re supposed to be tortured.’”
