We organize accessible science events in all of your favorite hangouts!
Come join us for an evening of Investigations and Communications at Black Crow Coffee Co! We have 3 stimulating talks planned for the evening, featuring Dr. Jackie Hinkley who will speak about aphasia-the loss or ability to understand or express speech, Richard Meier who will tell us about the science used to investigate fires, and Michelle Guitard who will share her stories as an Antarctic paleoceanographer.
Speakers include:
Dr. Jackie Hinckley: How We Talk Is Not Always How We Think
We all search for words to express our thoughts sometimes. Some people – those living with aphasia due to stroke - live in a constant state of searching for words despite having all of their thoughts. Yet, we often make assumptions about others based on their words. This talk will explore the phenomenon of separating words and thoughts, and how we can make a better world by remembering that words are not the same as people’s thoughts.
Richard Meier: Half of my Puzzle Pieces are Missing...
What do fire investigators do, and how do they do it? Where everyone else see a pile of ashes, we start looking for evidence. Unlike "CSI" type crime shows, finding the answers in a state of the art fire investigation is about getting dirty and usually has very little to do with fancy computer simulations. That's not to say there is no science involved, there's lots of that going on behind the curtain. Where that science comes from, and how it find's its way in will also be discussed.
Michelle Guitard: Time Travel in Antarctica
The talk will describe the work of an Antarctic paleoceanographer (scientist who studies oceanography through the geologic past) and why studying past climate in the coldest, dryest, most remote continent is relevant to modern society.
