Event Details

This two-part field trip starts at the South Cross Bayou Water Reclamation Facility and continues at the Solid Waste Facility.  Join us for one or both locations!

9:30-11:30am    South Cross Bayou Water Reclamation Facility (7401 54th Avenue North, St. Petersburg, FL) is the largest wastewater treatment facility in Pinellas County. First built as a trickling filter plant in the 1960’s, it has evolved into an advanced 33mgd wastewater treatment plant and resource recovery facility.
Focused on sustainability, the facility has a successful resource recovery program demonstrated by the production of reclaimed water for irrigation, fertilizer from recycling of biosolids and green-energy capture of biogas. The South Cross Bayou WRF has a long history of community outreach and public education, and is currently expanding its program as an experiential learning platform to link classroom learning to real-world applications, working under the tagline, “Innovate – Create – Educate.”
1-3pm   Our day continues at the Pinellas County Solid Waste Facility (3095 114th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, FL) where we learn that there’s no such place as “away” for your garbage. They manage the only landfill in the county that takes household garbage, to boot. Pinellas County has one of the most advanced waste management systems in the Southeast United States.
Come see how they do it! Learn first hand about the processes of the landfill, Waste-to-Energy facility, and recycling programs, and how you can protect our community, and conserve resources to ensure a sustainable future. From waste reduction and recycling in businesses, schools and homes to building artificial reefs offshore, we can make a difference, while saving costs and energy too.
To further citizen engagement, Pinellas recently partnered with Hillsborough County in a regional “Trash the Bag” campaign to encourage residents to keep recycling bag-free by properly disposing of plastic bags. This is the first time all the county and city solid waste departments have worked together
