The St. Pete Underwater Club's annual Spearfishing Tournament, the St. Pete Open will return for its 48th year in the waters off St. Petersburg from August 16-18.

Taking place around a home base at the Magnuson Hotel Marina Cove on Sunshine Skyway Ln., the St. Pete Open has grown into becoming the world's largest spearfishing tournament over the years with roughly 300 participants and thousands of spectators expected to attend over the weekend.

Many of the world's largest spearfishing catches have been caught at the St. Pete open as hundreds of divers from throughout the world hunt just several hundred yards offshore for big fish weighing upwards of 50 pounds.

The action starts a week before as the St. Pete Underwater Club hosts a kickoff party on Saturday, August 9 at Ferg's with your last chance for early registration which is $70 for adults and $40 for kids.

The St. Pete Open will officially kick off on Saturday, August 17 at the strike of midnight and run until 7:30 that evening.  Afterward, there will be a big party at the marina with food, drinks, a beer truck, vendors, and more.

The St. Pete Open will end with an awards ceremony on Sunday, August 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the Magnuson Resort as the top divers will be awarded with prizes and more from the biggest prize table in spear fishing.
