It's almost a done deal; all signs are pointing towards the 2012 Republican National Convention hosting their kick-off party at Tropicana Field in Downtown St. Petersburg.

There are commitments of around $1 million for the RNC to host their party at the Trop on Sunday, August 26, but a few small details still need to be ironed out in order to finalize the deal according to the Tampa Tribune.

The event is currently on hold because planners part of the 2012 Tampa Bay Host Committee need to determine how much of the field can be used for partygoers and the thousands of media representatives that will descend upon Tampa for the week.

Rays officials are also concerned about the playing field and the amount of people the stadium can truly accomodate according to Bill Edwards, host Committee executive committee member, local music promoter, and apparent savior of the Baywalk complex Downtown.

The four days of the 2012 Republican National Convention and the night of August 26 have been specially designated by the Department of Homeland Security.  This will lead to extra security measures as well as possible additional federal funding for the party.
